After you’ve combined the ingredients, you’ll want to let the dough sit for 5 minutes. This allows time for the baking powder to activate. This is the perfect time to heat your waffle maker. (Phi has this one and uses it all the time!)

This was the first time I have made cornmeal waffles. Because they are not as sweet as regular waffles, they go very well with savory foods. I served them as dippers with the turkey/veggie soup I made today. Excellent! After I made the first waffle and tasted it, I decided to add a little salt to the remaining batter. It brought up the flavor of the waffles. Thanks for sharing this recipe!

These were really delicious. I made them just as listed, but my milk was a bit beyond fresh, so I was able to avoid wasting it as this recipe includes a tiny bit of sugar. The recipe made 7, which was enough for my appreciative family.

What kind of flour is best for waffles? ›

On the flip side, waffles aren't as flaky-delicate as baked goods, making pastry flour too fine for the job. Good old AP, or all-purpose, flour is where it's at. If you want to sprinkle in a tablespoon or two of buckwheat or rye flour for added nutty heft, go for it.

What makes waffles taste so good? ›

Baking powder and baking soda: Help our waffles rise and brown. I recommend using both for the best waffles. Sugar, salt, and vanilla extract: Make our waffles taste amazing. I keep the sugar amount low since I love pouring maple syrup on top, but you can increase the sugar for sweeter waffles.

Why are my waffles soft and not crispy? ›

Bake Them in the Oven for That Crisp Finish

Just remember to place them directly on the oven rack so the steam can escape. If you use a sheet pan, the steam will stay trapped and your airy and crisp waffle will go limp and soggy. A true tragedy when you're so close to breakfast!

Should you let waffle batter rest? ›

Recommended overnight or 2 hr resting – for the tastiest waffles, rest the batter overnight in the fridge or for at least 2 hours. This makes the flour grains absorb the liquid so it makes the inside of the waffles softer.

How do you keep waffles crisp while making more? ›

Here are some other ways to keep the sogginess at bay:
  1. Place your waffles on a cooling rack in a low-heat oven (don't stack the waffles on top of each other).
  2. Throw your waffles in a toaster to refresh their crispiness.
  3. Make sure your waffle iron is very hot.

The Difference Between Belgian Waffles and Regular Waffles

These Belgian beauties are made with a recipe that includes yeasted batter and crunchy pearl sugar. Belgian waffles have extra-deep pockets—the better for filling with butter, jam, maple syrup, or whipped cream.

Are waffles better with milk or water? ›

The milk in your waffles acts as a binding agent and adds a level of richness that you just can't obtain with water alone.

How long to cook a waffle in a waffle maker? ›

Heat a waffle maker following the manufacturer's instructions, brush with a little of the oil, then ladle in enough batter to just cover the surface. Cook following the manufacturer's instructions (usually 5-6 mins) until the waffles are golden brown and crisp.

How to get waffles crispy in a waffle maker? ›

Make Sure Your Waffle Iron Is Hot

You should actually hear the batter sizzle on contact. The outer crust will immediately begin to set and crisp. Moisture in the batter quickly turns to steam and evaporates out the sides of the pan. If the iron isn't hot, none of this happens and the waffles will be soggy and squishy.

How to get crispier waffles? ›

  3. Bake the Finished Waffles in the Oven.

How important is baking soda in waffles? ›

Pancakes and waffles typically both contain baking soda, which causes them to rise. As soon as the baking soda is combined with the wet ingredients (which contain an acidic ingredient, like often buttermilk), it starts producing carbon dioxide gas bubbles that cause the batter to rise.

How important are eggs in waffles? ›

As a rule, egg yolks are an essential part of any proper waffle. However, it's still a good idea to separate the yolks and the eggs. You can beat the egg yolks and then add them to the rest of your wet ingredients (butter, milk, etc.) From there, beat the whites until they begin to stiffen.
